What is High Coast Hike? »
High Coast Hike is one of Europe’s most popular hiking adventures, taking place every August and attracting hundreds of participants from all over the world.
You can choose between two distances – the classic The Original and Wanderlust, which is slightly shorter and gives you more time for breaks. You can also choose Wanderlust Light, where we help transport some of your gear, allowing you to hike with a lighter backpack.
You’ll find more information about each experience in the links below. Over three days, we experience the very best of the High Coast World Heritage Site. We hike at our own pace through spectacular landscapes, carrying our own gear and tents to our shared campsites.
The adventure includes bus transfers, guides, food, outdoor workshops, the After-Hike and plenty of fun along the way.
In the evenings, you can relax, hang out with fellow hikers around the campfires or join one of the outdoor workshops, where you’ll meet some of Sweden’s leading outdoor brands.
The adventure kicks off with a relaxed welcome evening and finishes with a big After-Hike celebration in FriluftsByn.
More information about each experience:

Sofia Nilsson
”We’ve put together the kind of adventure we love heading out on ourselves. This is going to be fun!”
Jerry, FriluftsByn
”A big reason for coming back is the nice atmosphere. It kind of happens by itself when you set out like this.”
Paul Wright

For our first night, we set up camp at one of the most beautiful camping spots in the World Heritage Site – Tärnättholmarna. There’s plenty of space, and you can choose whether to pitch your tent close to others or find a more secluded spot.

HIGH COAST HIKE
Hiking Day 2.
Secluded bays, deep forests and mountains with incredible views.
We wake up by the coast with another great day ahead of us, filled with new mountain viewpoints, deep forests and several sandy beaches perfect for a swim.
The Original and Wanderlust follow different routes in the morning, but both groups meet around lunchtime at Kälsviken, a beautiful shallow lagoon that’s perfect for a swim. From there, we continue together into Skuleskogen National Park before reaching our campsite in Dal. In the evening, we hike up Gyltberget for incredible views and meet Naturkompaniet.
You leave camp when you feel ready – but no earlier than 08:00 and no later than 09:30.
Participants hiking The Original start the day by making their way up through “Lilla Slåttdalsskrevan” to Tärnättgrottan and Tärnättutsikten, before heading back down towards the coast.
Participants hiking Wanderlust continue along the coast, passing several small sandy beaches. Both groups meet up at Kälsviken, which is a perfect spot for lunch.
We wake up with the sea right outside our tents. There’s plenty of time, and you check out from camp and start hiking at your own pace between 08:00 – 10:00. There’s no group start – simply set off when you feel ready, but no later than 10:00.
After checking out from camp, those hiking The Original head up towards Tärnättutsikten through “Lilla Slåttdalsskrevan” and past Tärnättgrottan. It’s a fairly steep start, but the reward comes as you hike with views back towards the campsite you’ve just left and across the High Coast archipelago.
If you’re hiking Wanderlust, you follow the coastline past several beautiful little beaches until you reach the shallow sandy beach at Kälsviken, where The Original joins up. This is where most hikers stop for lunch before we head into the forest towards our campsite in Dal.
Once we’ve pitched our tents, we hike up Gyltberget for an outdoor workshop with Naturkompaniet and take in the incredible views from Gyltstenen. It’s going to be another amazing day.
Best lunch spot: Kälsviken

Adventure Loop:
If you’re hiking Wanderlust and feel that the first day was a little too short, you can join The Original for the hike up to Tärnättutsikten.
By lunchtime, both The Original and Wanderlust usually reach Kälsviken, which is the perfect spot for lunch before we continue towards the campsite.
Our second campsite is set in an open area at the foot of Gyltberget, just outside Skuleskogen National Park. Here, we open up a small café and kick off a fun and relaxed three-event challenge.
From the campsite, it’s about a 30-minute hike up Gyltberget, where you’ll also find the impressive Gyltstenen and sweeping views in every direction. Just below Gyltstenen, Naturkompaniet hosts an outdoor workshop.
Some choose to relax down at camp, but most make their way up to the top of Gyltberget.
Our second campsite has access to running water. You can also hike over to Dalsjöfallet for a refreshing natural shower.
At the top of the mountain next to the campsite, Naturkompaniet hosts an outdoor skills workshop. Pick up plenty of useful tips and tricks.
HIGH COAST HIKE
The Hike Day 3.
High Coast trail, Skuleberget and After-Hike
Today, The Original and Wanderlust follow the same route. We hike along the High Coast Trail over Getsvedjeberget and continue towards the grand finale – the finish line at the top of Skuleberget.
Skuleberget offers a proper final climb, but the reward is spectacular: some of the most beautiful views in Sweden. Before long, you’ll be standing at the finish line, on top of the High Coast World Heritage Site. After taking in the views and enjoying a well-earned break at the Summit Cabin, we head down to FriluftsByn, where the adventure wraps up with the After-Hike, campfires and live music.
We follow the High Coast Trail to Skuleberget. From there, the dramatic final climb begins. Choose between Grottstigen or Höga Kustenstigen.
Grottstigen is considerably steeper and includes sections with stairs. Take your time, encourage each other and stop for plenty of breaks. Before you know it, you’ll be at the top.
You can also leave your backpack with a guide before starting the climb up Skuleberget. You’ll get it back when you return to FriluftsByn.
That feeling. We’ve been out on the trail for three days, and now we’ve made it. With all the experiences and new friendships along the way, it’ll feel like we’ve been out here for a week.
The final stage – with one of the most dramatic finishes a hike could ask for. From our campsite in Dal, we follow the High Coast Trail over Getsvedjeberget towards the mighty Skuleberget. You decide whether to take the steep Grottstigen past Kungsgrottan (not suitable for dogs) or Höga Kustenstigen, which follows the southern side of Skuleberget.
Once at the top, you’re rewarded with some of the most spectacular views in the World Heritage Site. After crossing the finish line at the summit, we hike down Höga Kustenstigen to FriluftsByn, where we celebrate the achievement at the After-Hike.
Distance:
The Original: 10 km
Wanderlust: 10 km
Time: ca 5h hike (exl breaks)
The views from the top of the World Heritage Site are among the most beautiful in Sweden.
The finish line. Hugs, photos, cheers and a chance to sit down and enjoy something tasty at the Summit Cabin.
After taking in the views from the top of Skuleberget, we hike down to FriluftsByn to celebrate what we’ve achieved.
