HIKE THE HIGH COAST HIKE
Program
The hike runs from Thursday to Saturday, but many participants arrive on Wednesday and stay until Sunday to ease into the adventure and enjoy a little extra time in the outdoors.
Over three days, you’ll hike at your own pace through the dramatic landscapes of the High Coast. You carry your own gear and camp in shared overnight campsites, where we come together for outdoor workshops, campfires, and good company.
Below you’ll find a quick overview of the adventure. Further down the page, you can explore each stage in more detail.
WEDNESDAY
Most participants arrive at Friluftsbyn on Wednesday evening. This is where you’ll check in, pick up your food and map, and settle into the atmosphere alongside fellow hikers.
At 20:00, we gather for a shared briefing where we go through everything you need to know before the adventure begins. We also host a digital pre-hike briefing in the ”High Coast Hikers” group ahead of the event.
THURSDAY
If you haven’t already checked in, you’ll do so in the morning before boarding the buses that take you to the start of the hike.
This is where the adventure truly begins. You’ll hike at your own pace through coastal mountains, forests, and along the shoreline.
Towards the evening, you’ll arrive at Camp Tärnättholmarna, where we gather for our first overnight camp. Pitch your tent, take a swim, and settle into the atmosphere with fellow hikers. Here, you’ll also get the chance to meet the team from Woolpower.
FRIDAY
You leave the campsite at your own pace between 08:00 and 09:30.
Today’s stage offers a wonderful mix of coastline, sandy beaches, deep forests, and new viewpoints along the way. There are plenty of opportunities to take breaks, go for a swim, and simply enjoy the surroundings.
Towards the evening, you’ll arrive at Camp Gyltberget, where we gather for the night’s camp. Here, you can relax, spend time with fellow hikers, and join an outdoor workshop with Naturkompaniet at the top of the scenic viewpoint.
SATURDAY
On the final day, we follow the High Coast Trail via Getsvedjeberget towards the grand finale – the summit of Skuleberget.
After three days out on the trail, you’ll be standing there. The views, the feeling, and everything you’ve experienced along the way. Most hikers reach the finish around 14:00, and the celebration begins right there on the summit.
From there, we hike down to Friluftsbyn, where the evening continues with the After-Hike celebration from 17:00 to 23:00 – good food, live music, and an atmosphere that only gets better as the night goes on.
SUNDAY
The adventure includes a campsite spot at Friluftsbyn between Saturday and Sunday, and most participants choose to stay after the After-Hike celebration.
Sunday morning is all about taking it slow, with the option to enjoy breakfast and some time to unwind after the days spent on the trail. Many linger for hours, sharing stories from the adventure and enjoying one last swim or coffee together.
Around lunchtime, most people begin their journey home, while others choose to stay a little longer and explore more of the High Coast.

HIGH COAST HIKE
The Hike Day 1.
Coastal Peaks, Ravines, Lakes, and Shoreline Trails
On the first day, The Original and Wanderlust start from different locations, but the routes come together during the day, and of course you’ll all meet at the evening campsite.
Along the way, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views from coastal peaks and experience the iconic Slåttdalsskrevan ravine. You might even find time for a swim in both forest lakes and the sea. It’s a spectacular start to the adventure ahead.
From day one, both The Original and Wanderlust take you to some of the High Coast’s most iconic highlights – Slåttdalsberget, the dramatic Slåttdalsskrevan ravine, and Tärnättholmarna. The Original also kicks things off with a climb up Stampberget, offering a memorable start to the adventure.
On Thursday morning, we board the buses that take us to the starting points for each route. Participants in The Original begin at the western entrance to Skuleskogen National Park and head towards Skrattabbortjärnen and Stampberget before continuing on to the summit of Slåttdalsberget. Wanderlust starts from the South Entrance and heads directly towards Slåttdalsberget.
The two routes come together at Slåttdalsberget, where we continue down towards Tärnättvattnet and on to the coast, reaching our overnight camp at the beautiful Tärnättholmarna.
Best lunch spots: Stampberget, Slåttdalsberget, and Tärnättvattnet.
Best dinner spot: Tärnättholmarna.
Buses:
Buses depart from FriluftsByn to each starting point.
The Original: 08:00 AM
Wanderlust: 08:30 AM
When you arrive at the campsite, make sure to check in at the Checkpoint. Then it’s time to find a great spot to pitch your tent and settle in.
After that, you can join the outdoor workshop and activities with Woolpower, take a swim, relax around the campfire, or simply unwind on the coastal rocks right by the sea.
The first night is spent at one of the World Heritage area’s most beautiful campsites – Tärnättholmarna. There’s plenty of space, and you can choose whether you’d like to camp close to others or find a more secluded spot of your own.
At the first overnight camp, you’ll also have the chance to meet Woolpower, who will share insights into the benefits of wool and invite you to join their creative workshop, where you can make your own outdoor gear and accessories from leftover materials.
More Information: Courses & Workshops »
A seat pad, camp slippers, a phone pouch, or whatever else you can dream up. There’s something wonderfully calming about making things out in the forest. Woolpower brings the tools and leftover materials out to the campsite, so all you need to bring is your creativity.
Some people get creative, others go for a swim or stretch out on the rocks by the sea. A few retreat to their tents to scroll through the day’s photos, while elsewhere small groups naturally gather to relax and enjoy the evening together.
With participants from all over the world, there’s always a story to share and plenty to talk about.
The first hikers usually arrive at camp around 4:00 PM, while those who have taken a few extra breaks along the way often arrive closer to 6:00 PM.
With the long, bright summer evenings, there’s plenty of time to relax and enjoy the campsite before settling in for the night.
HIGH COAST HIKE
The Hike Day 2.
Swimming Coves, Deep Forests, and Mountains with Breathtaking Views
We wake up by the coast with another fantastic day ahead of us. New viewpoints, deep forests, and several sandy beaches invite you to slow down, take a break, and enjoy a swim along the way.
The Original and Wanderlust follow different routes during the morning, but both groups meet around lunchtime at Kälsviken – a beautiful shallow lagoon that’s perfect for a swim. From there, we continue together into Skuleskogen National Park before reaching our overnight camp in Dal.
In the evening, we hike up Gyltberget for breathtaking views across the landscape and spend time with Naturkompaniet.
You leave the campsite whenever you feel ready, at your own pace. The earliest departure time is 08:00 AM, and all hikers should be on the trail by 09:30 AM.
Participants in The Original begin the day by hiking up through the “Little Slåttdalsskrevan” ravine to Tärnättgrottan and the Tärnätt Viewpoint before making their way back down towards the coast.
Participants in Wanderlust continue along the coastline, passing several small sandy beaches along the way. Both groups meet up at Kälsviken, a beautiful spot and the perfect place to stop for lunch.
We wake up with the sea as our neighbour. There’s no rush this morning – you check out from the campsite and start hiking at your own pace sometime between 08:00 AM and 10:00 AM. There’s no group departure; you simply set off when you feel ready. The only requirement is that everyone leaves camp by 10:00 AM.
If you’re hiking The Original, the day begins with a climb towards the Tärnätt Viewpoint through the “Little Slåttdalsskrevan” ravine and past Tärnättgrottan. It’s a fairly steep start, but the reward comes quickly as you hike with views back towards the campsite you just left and out across the High Coast archipelago.
If you’re hiking Wanderlust, you continue along the coastline, passing several beautiful little beaches before reaching the shallow sandy shores of Kälsviken, where The Original route joins you. This is where most hikers stop for lunch before continuing through the forest towards the overnight camp in Dal.
Once the tents are up, we head up Gyltberget for an outdoor workshop with Naturkompaniet and enjoy the breathtaking views from Gyltstenen. Another unforgettable day awaits.
Best lunch spot: Kälsviken
Best dinner spot: The overnight camp in Dal
Distance:
The Original: 13 km
Wanderlust: 9 km
Time:
Approximately 6 hours of hiking (excluding breaks)
Included Along the Way:
Outdoor workshop with Naturkompaniet.
Shortcut Option:
If you’re hiking The Original and feel that the first day was more challenging than expected, you can choose to take the shorter Wanderlust route on Day 2.
Extra Adventure Option:
If you’re hiking Wanderlust and feel that the first day was a little too short, you’re welcome to join The Original route up to the Tärnätt Viewpoint before continuing on your way.
Around lunchtime, both The Original and Wanderlust usually arrive at Kälsviken, making it the perfect place to stop for lunch before continuing on towards the overnight camp.
Our second overnight camp is set in an open area at the foot of Gyltberget, just outside Skuleskogen National Park. Here, we set up a small camp café and kick off a fun and light-hearted outdoor challenge with fellow hikers.
From the campsite, it’s about a 30-minute walk up Gyltberget, where you’ll find the impressive Gyltstenen viewpoint with sweeping views in every direction. Just below the viewpoint, Naturkompaniet hosts its outdoor workshop, offering inspiration, knowledge, and practical tips in a truly spectacular setting.
Some people choose to relax down at camp, but most make their way up to the summit of Gyltberget to take in the views and enjoy the evening atmosphere.
Our second overnight camp has access to fresh running water. You can also take a short walk to Dalsjöfallet, where you’ll have the chance to enjoy a refreshing natural shower beneath the waterfall.
At the summit viewpoint above the campsite, Naturkompaniet hosts an outdoor skills workshop. Pick up plenty of useful tips, practical know-how, and inspiration to help you get even more out of your time outdoors.
HIGH COAST HIKE
The Hike Day 3.
The High Coast Trail, Skuleberget, and the After-Hike Celebration
Today, The Original and Wanderlust follow the same route. We hike along the High Coast Trail across Getsvedjeberget and continue towards the grand finale – the finish line at the summit of Skuleberget.
The climb up Skuleberget is a challenge, but the reward is extraordinary: some of the most spectacular views in Sweden. Before long, you’ll be standing at the finish, high above the UNESCO World Heritage-listed High Coast.
After taking in the views and enjoying a fika at the summit lodge, we make our way down to Friluftsbyn, where the adventure wraps up with the After-Hike celebration, campfires, and live music.
We get ready for the final stage of the adventure. Just like on the previous days, participants in Wanderlust Light have their gear transported for them, and today it will be taken back to Friluftsbyn. On the final day, participants in both The Original and Wanderlust also have the option to transport part of their gear back to Friluftsbyn, making the climb up Skuleberget a little easier and more enjoyable.
After around 5 kilometres, those who feel like adding a little extra to the day can leave their backpack and take a 3 km return detour up Getsvedjeberget. The views are similar to those from halfway up Skuleberget, but what really draws hikers to this spot is the High Coast’s very own ”Preacher’s Pulpit” – a dramatic rock formation with spectacular views across the surrounding landscape.
We follow the High Coast Trail all the way to Skuleberget, where the dramatic finale begins. From here, you can choose between two routes to the summit: Grottstigen or High Coast Trail. Both offer a memorable climb, each with its own character and adventure along the way.
Grottstigen is the steeper of the two routes and includes sections with stairs and a more demanding climb. Take your time, encourage each other, and enjoy plenty of breaks along the way. Before you know it, you’ll be standing on the summit.
You can also leave your backpack with one of the guides before starting the climb up Skuleberget. Your backpack will be transported back to Friluftsbyn, where you’ll receive it once you arrive after the hike.
The Feeling. We’ve spent three days out on the trail, and now we’ve made it. It will feel like you’ve been away for a week, thanks to all the experiences you’ve shared, the places you’ve discovered, and the new friendships you’ve made along the way.
The Final Stage – and one of the most dramatic finishes a hike can offer. From the overnight camp in Dal, we follow the High Coast Trail across Getsvedjeberget towards the mighty Skuleberget. As you approach the mountain, you choose your route to the summit: the steep Grottstigen, passing the King’s Cave (not suitable for dogs), or Höga Kustenstigen, which climbs the southern side of Skuleberget.
At the top, the reward is waiting – some of the most spectacular views in the entire World Heritage area. After crossing the finish line on the summit, we follow Höga Kustenstigen back down to Friluftsbyn, where we celebrate the achievement together at the After-Hike.
Distance:
The Original: 10 km
Wanderlust: 10 km
Time:
Approximately 5 hours of hiking (excl. breaks)
The views from the summit, overlooking the UNESCO World Heritage-listed High Coast, are among the most breathtaking in Sweden.
Finish Line. Hugs, laughter, photo bombs, cheers, and finally taking a seat at the summit lodge to enjoy something tasty while soaking in the moment.
After taking in the views from the summit of Skuleberget, we make our way down to Friluftsbyn to celebrate everything we’ve accomplished together.
High Coast Hike is one of Europe’s most popular hiking adventures and has, since 2013, welcomed both curious first-time hikers and experienced outdoor enthusiasts from around the world. Welcome to an unforgettable experience filled with breathtaking nature, outdoor workshops, and a warm sense of community in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed High Coast.
