How challenging is the Original?

The Original is a challenging hike, but with the right preparation, it’s absolutely achievable. Success is often a combination of general fitness and getting your body used to carrying a backpack before the adventure. We recommend gradually increasing both the distance you hike and the weight you carry in the weeks leading up to the event.

You’ll hike between 10 and 16 kilometres per day, with the first day being the longest stage. On Day 2, there’s an optional shortcut available. You’ll miss some beautiful viewpoints, but in return you’ll avoid most of the elevation gain, as the standard route begins with a climb to a scenic viewpoint.

If you experience discomfort in your knees, back, or shoulders, there’s also an option on Day 3 to have part of your gear transported back to Friluftsbyn. This allows you to tackle the final stage with a lighter backpack.

We do everything we can to help you enjoy the spectacular nature and the welcoming atmosphere along the way, but your preparation beforehand will make a big difference to your overall experience.

If you’re unsure whether The Original is the right fit, Wanderlust may be a great alternative. While The Original offers shortcuts for those who need an easier day, Wanderlust includes optional discovery loops that let you add extra distance and viewpoints if you’re feeling energetic and want more adventure.

Can I leave the hike early?

In the more than ten years we’ve been organizing High Coast Hike, very few participants have had to leave the hike before the finish. But it does happen.

In most cases, it’s because participants haven’t tested their backpack with their full gear before the event or haven’t prepared their body by hiking with a loaded backpack beforehand. For others, it may be an old injury that starts to make itself felt during the hike.

The result is often sore shoulders, back pain, or aching knees, making it difficult to continue with The Original route.

If that happens, we’ll do everything we can to help you continue enjoying the adventure:

1. We can suggest shortcuts that allow you to skip some sections and viewpoints while making the hike less demanding.
2. At certain locations, we can help transport part of your gear. This option is available at the South Entrance and at the second overnight camp.
3. If needed, we can arrange transportation back to Friluftsbyn, where you can set up camp and enjoy suggested day trips on your own before rejoining the group on Day 3.
4. If continuing the hike isn’t the right option, we can arrange transportation back to Friluftsbyn so you can relax, recover, and get ready for the After-Hike celebration.

Our goal is for you to have a great experience, even if things don’t go exactly as planned this time around.

Who usually joins the adventure?
